    Forecasting time series by means of evolutionary algorithms

    Proceeding of: 8th International Conference in Parallel Problem Solving from Nature - PPSN VIII , Birmingham, UK, September 18-22, 2004.The time series forecast is a very complex problem, consisting in predicting the behaviour of a data series with only the information of the previous sequence. There is many physical and artificial phenomenon that can be described by time series. The prediction of such phenomenon could be very complex. For instance, in the case of tide forecast, unusually high tides, or sea surges, result from a combination of chaotic climatic elements in conjunction with the more normal, periodic, tidal systems associated with a particular area. Too much variables influence the behaviour of the water level. Our problem is not only to find prediction rules, we also need to discard the noise and select the representative data. Our objective is to generate a set of prediction rules. There are many methods tying to achieve good predictions. In most of the cases this methods look for general rules that are able to predict the whole series. The problem is that usually the time series has local behaviours that dont allow a good level of prediction when using general rules. In this work we present a method for finding local rules able to predict only some zones of the series but achieving better level prediction. This method is based on the evolution of set of rules genetically codified, and following the Michigan approach. For evaluating the proposal, two different domains have been used: an artificial domain widely use in the bibliography (Mackey-Glass series) and a time series corresponding to a natural phenomenon, the water level in Venice Lagoon.Investigation supported by the Spanish Ministry of Science and Technology through the TRACER project under contract TIC2002-04498-C05-

    Evolving temporal association rules with genetic algorithms

    A novel framework for mining temporal association rules by discovering itemsets with a genetic algorithm is introduced. Metaheuristics have been applied to association rule mining, we show the efficacy of extending this to another variant - temporal association rule mining. Our framework is an enhancement to existing temporal association rule mining methods as it employs a genetic algorithm to simultaneously search the rule space and temporal space. A methodology for validating the ability of the proposed framework isolates target temporal itemsets in synthetic datasets. The Iterative Rule Learning method successfully discovers these targets in datasets with varying levels of difficulty

    Preoperative Posturing of Patients with Macula-On Retinal Detachment Reduces Progression Toward the Fovea

    Purpose: Traditionally, preoperative posturing consisting of bed rest and positioning is prescribed to patients with macula-on retinal detachment (RD) to prevent RD progression and detachment of the fovea. Execution of such advice can be cumbersome and expensive. This study aimed to investigate if preoperative posturing affects the progression of RD. Design: Prospective cohort study. Participants: Ninety-eight patients with macula-on RD were included. Inclusion criteria were volume optical coherence tomography (OCT) scans could be obtained with sufficient quality; and the smallest distance from the fovea to the detachment border was 1.25 mm or more. Methods: Patients were admitted to the ward for bed rest in anticipation of surgery and were positioned on the side where the RD was mainly located. At baseline and before and after each interruption for meals or toilet visits, a 37°×45° OCT volume scan was performed using a wide-angle Spectralis OCT (Heidelberg Engineering, Heidelberg, Germany). The distance between the nearest point of the RD border and fovea was measured using a custom-built measuring tool. Main Outcome Measures: The RD border displacement and the average RD border displacement velocity moving toward (negative) or away (positive) from the fovea were determined for intervals of posturing and interruptions. Results: The median duration of intervals of posturing was 3.0 hours (interquartile range [IQR], 1.8-14.0 hours; n = 202) and of interruptions 0.37 hours (IQR, 0.26-0.50 hours; n = 197). The median RD border displacement was 2 μm (IQR, -65 to +251 μm) during posturing and -61 μm (IQR, -140 to 0 μm) during interruptions, a statistically significant difference (P < 0.001, Mann-Whitney U test). The median RD border displacement velocity was +1 μm/hour (IQR, -21 to +49 μm/hour) during posturing and -149 μm/hour (IQR, -406 to +1 μm/hour) during interruptions, a statistically significant difference (P < 0.001). Conclusions: By making use of usual interruptions of preoperative posturing we were able to show, in a prospective and ethically acceptable manner, that RD stabilizes during posturing and progresses during interruptions in patients with macula-on RD.     Optimizing Classification Ensembles via a Genetic Algorithm for a Web-Based Educational System

    Abstract. Classification fusion combines multiple classifications of data into a single classification solution of greater accuracy. Feature extraction aims to reduce the computational cost of feature measurement, increase classifier efficiency, and allow greater classification accuracy based on the process of deriving new features from the original features. This paper represents an approach for classifying students in order to predict their final grades based on features extracted from logged data in an educational web-based system. A combination of multiple classifiers leads to a significant improvement in classification performance. By weighing feature vectors representing feature importance using a Genetic Algorithm (GA) we can optimize the prediction accuracy and obtain a marked improvement over raw classification. We further show that when the number of features is few, feature weighting and transformation into a new space works efficiently compared to the feature subset selection. This approach is easily adaptable to different types of courses, different population sizes, and allows for different features to be analyzed.

    Binding of CML-Modified as Well as Heat-Glycated beta-lactoglobulin to Receptors for AGEs Is Determined by Charge and Hydrophobicity

    Intake of dietary advanced glycation end products (AGEs) is associated with inflammation-related health problems. Nε-carboxymethyl lysine (CML) is one of the best characterised AGEs in processed food. AGEs have been described as ligands for receptors present on antigen presenting cells. However, changes in protein secondary and tertiary structure also induce binding to AGE receptors. We aimed to discriminate the role of different protein modifications in binding to AGE receptors. Therefore, β-lactoglobulin was chemically modified with glyoxylic acid to produce CML and compared to β-lactoglobulin glycated with lactose. Secondary structure was monitored with circular dichroism, while hydrophobicity and formation of β-sheet structures was measured with ANS-assay and ThT-assay, respectively. Aggregation was monitored using native-PAGE. Binding to sRAGE, CD36, and galectin-3 was measured using inhibition ELISA. Even though no changes in secondary structure were observed in all tested samples, binding to AGE receptors increased with CML concentration of CML-modified β-lactoglobulin. The negative charge of CML was a crucial determinant for the binding of protein bound CML, while binding of glycated BLG was determined by increasing hydrophobicity. This shows that sRAGE, galectin-3, and CD36 bind to protein bound CML and points out the role of negatively charged AGEs in binding to AGE receptors

    Structure, mass and stability of galactic disks

    In this review I concentrate on three areas related to structure of disks in spiral galaxies. First I will review the work on structure, kinematics and dynamics of stellar disks. Next I will review the progress in the area of flaring of HI layers. These subjects are relevant for the presence of dark matter and lead to the conclusion that disk are in general not `maximal', have lower M/L ratios than previously suspected and are locally stable w.r.t. Toomre's Q criterion for local stability.     Mechanisms underlying the skin-gut cross talk in the development of ige-mediated food allergy

    Immune-globulin E (IgE)-mediated food allergy is characterized by a variety of clinical entities within the gastrointestinal tract, skin and lungs, and systemically as anaphylaxis. The default response to food antigens, which is antigen specific immune tolerance, requires exposure to the antigen and is already initiated during pregnancy. After birth, tolerance is mostly acquired in the gut after oral ingestion of dietary proteins, whilst exposure to these same proteins via the skin, especially when it is inflamed and has a disrupted barrier, can lead to allergic sensitization. The crosstalk between the skin and the gut, which is involved in the induction of food allergy, is still incompletely understood. In this review, we will focus on mechanisms underlying allergic sensitization (to food antigens) via the skin, leading to gastrointestinal inflammation, and the development of IgE-mediated food allergy. Better understanding of these processes will eventually help to develop new preventive and therapeutic strategies in children
